Currently, Tesla trades for about 200 times earnings expected over the coming 12 months. It’s the most expensive stock in the S&P 500. (Five companies aren’t expected to produce profits over that span, according to FactSet.)
Palantir is the second most expensive stock, trading at about 165 times forward earnings. Five stocks in the index have PE ratios north of 100, but Tesla, Palantir, and Boeing are the only three that have market values north of $100 billion and triple-digit PE ratios. Boeing, of course, has reported depressed earnings after six years of losses. Palantir and Tesla are viewed as growth stocks.
