Some Social Security beneficiaries in the U.S. are due to receive their latest monthly check slightly ahead of schedule, as the Social Security Administration (SSA) kicks off its May program of payments next week.

Who gets an early Social Security payment in May 2025? When will they be paid?

1) Long-term Social Security recipients:

Early payments are to be distributed to any Americans who have been receiving Social Security retirement benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Social Security survivor benefits since before May 1997.

Such long-term recipients are normally paid on the third of each month. However, as this date falls on a Saturday in May, their checks will instead be sent out on the nearest working day before then: Friday 2nd.

2) Recipients of SSI + regular Social Security

The above schedule change also affects anyone who not only claims retirement, SSDI or survivor pay, but also benefits from a separate scheme known as the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.

These dual beneficiaries are normally paid SSI on the first of the month and retirement/SSDI/survivor pay on the third of the month. In May, the former is to be distributed as normal on Thursday 1st, with the latter then scheduled to go out the following day.

What other Social Security payment dates are there in May 2025?

If you began claim retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits in or after May 1997, you will be issued your check on one of three Wednesdays in May. Your payment date will be determined by your birthday:

  • Wednesday, May 14: beneficiaries born on 1st to 10th of each month
  • Wednesday, May 21: beneficiaries born on 11th to 20th of each month
  • Wednesday, May 28: beneficiaries born on 21st to 31st of each month

How much do Social Security and SSI recipients get in the U.S.?

Retired workers – who represent over 70% of the more than 73 million people who receive either SSI or regular Social Security in the U.S. – are paid an average of $1,997.13 a month, the SSA says.

Disabled workers are issued an average monthly check for $1,580.51, and recipients of survivor pay get $1,563.91 per month on average. The SSI scheme provides average monthly payments of $715.58.
